Apartment fire in Palm Desert kills seven cats, one dog

Two people found themselves displaced todayfollowing a kitchen fire that killed seven cats and a dog and caused $40,000 indamage at a Palm Desert apartment, authorities said.

The fire in the 77400 block of Michigan Drive was reported at 8:35 p.m.Sunday, said Riverside County Fire Department spokesman Mark Annas, adding that25 firefighters contained the blaze to the kitchen and had it out in 21minutes.

No one was hurt, but seven cats and a dog were found dead in the unit,he said.

Annas said the fire displaced two adults and caused an estimated $40,000in damage. It was under investigation.
