Dirt bike rider killed in Cathedral City

Police in Cathedral City are investigating a deadly head-on crash that happened around 11 a.m. Thursday on Ventura Drive and Garbino Road, in a neighborhood near Vista Chino and Landau Boulevard.

Police say a blue sedan pulled out from Medano Road and hit a dirt bike that was traveling on Ventura Drive. The dirt bike rider, 33-year old Shaun Spann of Cathedral City was not wearing a helmet. He died at the scene.

Residents in the neighborhood have asked the city for years to install speed bumps or stop signs because they say people race down Ventura Drive on a regular basis.

“(We need) speed bumps or some other measure that keeps the people slow here. It’s awful,” said Andy Dutzi, who has lived on Ventura Drive for 20 years. “I call the cops once a month or so, they can’t do anything.”

Due to fatal crash, neighbors plan to renew their efforts to get the city of Cathedral City to place speed bumps on Ventura Drive. They plan to send out a petition for people in the neighborhood to sign and then submit the petition to city leaders.
