Record breaking heat in Coachella Valley
High pressure building over Southern California brought record-breaking heat to the Coachella Valley Wednesday. Temperatures reached 119 degrees in Thermal, breaking the record of 118 set on the same date in 2006.
It was 116 degrees in Palm Springs, tying the 2006 record for the date, according to the National Weather Service.
A NWS heat advisory is set to take effect at 11 a.m. Thursday and will extend until 9 p.m. Friday. The NWS predicted temperatures could reach 111-116 degrees in the Coachella Valley.
Weather service forecasters said hot weather can be stressful for people and pets if precautions are not taken. Kids and pets must not be left unattended in vehicles, because temperatures inside can rise quickly to lethal levels.
