Border Patrol agents to test use of body cameras
The U.S. Border Patrol has purchased body cameras and will begin testing them this year at its training academy.
Two people briefed on the move said Wednesday that testing will occur from October to December at the Border Patrol academy in Artesia, New Mexico.
It is unclear when, or even if, they will be introduced to any of the roughly 21,000 agents in the field. The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the plans have not been announced publicly.
R. Gil Kerlikowske, who leads the Border Patrol’s parent agency, announced the plans Tuesday to a small group of activists who have long pressed for the cameras as a check against excessive use of force by agents.
