Woman identified in deadly rollover on I-10

A 57 year old woman from Mesa, Arizona died in a car crash on westbound I-10 Monday afternoon in Indio, according to CHP Spokesman Michael Kissenger.

The Riverside County Coroner’s Office identified the woman Tuesday afternoon as Elsie Shumway.

The crash happened just west of Monroe Street at about 11:46 a.m.

Firefighters were ready to transport the woman to the hospital but said she died at the scene from major injuries.

Kissinger said CHP received calls about the woman driving erratically before the crash. She ended up veering off the road and rolled her Isuzu Trooper off the north side of the interstate. She was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash.

There was nobody else in her car and no other vehicles were involved in the crash. The woman hasn’t been identified.

Traffic on I-10 wasn’t affected following the crash.

News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 will deliver more details as the investigation into the cause of the crash continues.
