College students clean up Desert Hot Springs

Students from the University of Oregon spent their spring break giving back. The group partnered with DACE, or Desert Alliance Community Empowerment, and spent the day Wednesday picking up trash in Desert Hot Springs.

“The end goal is just to help a community get back on their feet and get back into healthier environments like right now there’s all this trash and we’re trying to eliminate all this toxic waste,” said sophomore, Jilian Carlo.

The students filled up dumpsters with the trash they collected and said they were determined to fill up as many as possible.

“There’s like about at least five acres of trash just full of trash, glass, anything that you can think of,” added Carlo.

Mayor Adam Sanchez hopes the students work will inspire people to pick up where they left off.

“Hopefully that’s going to put more motivation to our local residents and they become more engaged because we have people coming from out of town — college students who take pride in this. So, it really builds up our motivation to continue forward with our volunteer efforts,” said Sanchez.

The city of Desert Hot Springs has two more events planned to celebrate National Day of Service. They will have a “Solarthon” with Grid Alterniatives as well as a community cleanup day.
