Police arrest 2 suspects accused of killing 19-year-old

The Indio Police Department arrested two gang members accused of shooting a 19-year-old man to death in the 83-800 block of Gemini Street Tuesday night.

Julio Chavez Barraza was gunned down shortly after 9 p.m. near the Summerfield Apartments, located near Calhoun Street and Highway 111.

Indio police released information Friday morning saying they arrested two suspects on Wednesday. Martin Gutierrez, 21, and 20-year-old Enrique Alvarez, both from Indio, were booked into the Riverside County Jail on homicide charges.

Gutierrez is charged with murder, attempted murder and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, according to court records. Alvarez is charged with one count of murder.

They’re both being held on $2M bail pending arraignment, which was rescheduled to next Wednesday.

Officers said they are continuing to investigate the shooting and they’re also looking into additional crimes that may be attributed to Gutierrez and Alvarez.
