Cathedral City police said they arrested a 23-year-old man late Monday night after he finally surrendered following an hours-long standoff in the 69000 block of Stafford Place.

The standoff with police began just after 6 p.m. when officers were called to an assault in progress. Victims told police they had been stabbed by Christian Jonathan Garcia Cantu and he was still in the house.

When officers arrived to the scene, one victim had a stab wound to the stomach and the other had a stab wound to the back of his neck, according to the release.

The victims told police Garcia was under the influence of some unknown substance. According to our reporter at the scene, police were asking the suspect to throw the knife out of the house and surrender.

Officers surrounded the house and tried to get Cantu to exit voluntarily. After several hours with no communication, the Desert Regional SWAT team was called to assist. Flash bangs were going off inside the home while News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 were live from the scene at about 11 p.m.

Police were on scene late into the evening but Cantu finally surrendered to authorities. He was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and was booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.

Officials said both victims were taken to Desert Regional Medical Center and they’re in stable condition.

Cantu is tentatively scheduled to appear at court in Indio on Thursday.
