California police dog dies after being struck by car

A California police dog has died after being struck by a car during a training session.

The Sacramento Bee reports that Jag, a Belgian Malinois, was the only K-9 officer in the Twin Rivers Police Department. Sgt. Matthew Scott says Jag was fatally injured when he was hit by a vehicle at a K-9 regional training center in West Sacramento.

Scott says Jag lived with handler Sgt. Arlin Kocher and was considered a family pet.

Jag would have been 8 years old next week. Police say Jag was born in Mexico and purchased by the department five years ago to help officers apprehend suspects and sniff out narcotics.

But Scott says Jag also served an important role as an “ambassador” because all the kids loved him.
