The President works on his golf game at PGA West
President Barack Obama wraps up his second day in the desert for his two-day ASEAN Summit with leaders from Southeast Asian Nations.
He was out golfing at PGA West when news broke of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s death.
The president addressed the nation from the valley around 5:35 p.m. after news broke of the death of 79-year-old Scalia.
Earlier Saturday Obama started his day with a workout at 8:30 a.m.
From there he headed to PGA West for a round of golf on the famous Stadium course.
The White House said this is Obama’s first time on the course. He played with friends Greg Orme, Bobby Titcomb and Mike Ramos.
Security around PGA West was tight, with no media allowed near the greens.
We did get video of the president teeing off from professional golfer Rui Takamatsu.
We were able to talk to some people who were happy to see the president enjoying the Coachella Valley sun on the links.
“Uh hopefully it helps his golf game,” said Brian Simer, visiting from Atlanta.
“He’s so pent up in the White House and it’s good for him to get out and have some sort of a life,” said Frank Duncan, who lives in Cathedral City.
“I think it’s great that he takes time out for himself and his family to be stress free. He needs to unwind a bit,” said James Griswold, who lives in Rancho Mirage.
While a few grumble about road closures during the president’s visit, some Rancho Mirage residents are proud he stays in their neighborhood.
This morning there were some road closures, but I just worked around them and happy he’s here,” Griswold said.
Most people we talked to feel the summit with Southeast Asian leaders is essential.
“Yea it’s important. It’s one of the largest economies in the world. It would be great the more we can come together with Asian countries to support our trade, the better,” Simer said.
This is the president’s sixth visit to the valley.
His regular visits have some hoping those visits will turn into an extended stay.
“I’m happy about him coming here I’m hoping he and Michelle and the girls decide to settle here. There’s been rumors, all unsubstantiated,” Griswold said.
Obama released a short statement sending condolences to Scalia’s family.
The White House said he will nominate a successor.
