I-10 speed limit reduced at Jefferson St. construction zone

On Tuesday, authorities announced that the speed limit on Interstate 10 at the Jefferson Street construction zone will be reduced.

According to a news release, the speed limit for all vehicles traveling eastbound and westbound on I-10 has been reduced to 55 MPH within the construction zone.

The regular posted speed limit on I-10 is 70 MPH.

Posted warning signs have been placed ahead of the construction zone to alert drivers.

There have been quite a few crashes on I-10 recently, adding to the traffic congestion that’s been building on I-10 at Jefferson Street since the beginning of the construction project.

The Riverside County Transportation Committee said the point of the Jefferson Street construction project is to demolish the existing bridge and northbound Indio Boulevard overcrossing, to replace it with a new six-lane bridge with bicycle lanes on each side and a sidewalk on the northbound side of Jefferson Street. Construction crews are also modifying the on and off-ramps.

Is reducing speed limit on I-10 at Jefferson St. a good idea?
