Neighbors want crosswalk after deadly crash
Residents in a Palm Springs neighborhood want a crosswalk installed at the intersection of Vista Chino and Via Miraleste. This following a crash Thursday afternoon that killed a pedestrian trying to cross the street. A man was taken to the hospital and later died. The accident happened just before 1 p.m. Thursday. Vista Chino was closed for almost five hours between Indian and Avenida Caballeros while police investigated. Residents that live on this corner say that a combination of there being no crosswalk, along with speeding cars, make this a dangerous spot to cross the road. The speed limit is 45 mph. “Because the cars move pretty fast along here, and I would say this is not a safe intersection to walk through,” said Oliver Anderson, who lives on the corner. “I think it would be good to have one of those pedestrian crossings with a crosswalk,” said Philip Martin who lives in the neighborhood. “Perhaps without putting in a signal, you can put in one of those things where the lights would go on when someone crosses, and drivers would notice there is someone in the crosswalk.” KESQ & CBS Local 2’s Joe Galli contacted the City of Palm Springs to see what steps needed to be taken to get a crosswalk installed. But at the scene of the accident, a sergeant with the Palm Springs Police Department said that we should also call Caltrans. This section of Vista Chino is part of Highway 111, which would have the road fall under Caltrans jurisdiction. Neither the city, nor Caltrans responded to messages left for this report.
