Indio toddler drowns in family pool

An Indio family is mourning the loss of their little boy Friday night, after police say the almost three year old child, fell into the family’s swimming pool sometime during the early evening.

Police received an emergency call around 5:50 p.m. The caller stated that someone was not breathing at the home on the 81400 block of Avenida Gaviota. The home is a few blocks south of Highway 111 in an ungated community.

When officers from the Indio Police Department arrived, they learned the toddler had fallen into the family’s swimming pool. Someone drove the child to the hospital, and within minutes, he was declared dead.

Detectives are still trying to learn the circumstances that led to the drowning. “It is still too early in the investigation to determine exactly what was happening at the time,” said Sgt. Dan Marshall.

“IPD would like to remind everyone that pool safety is a year round responsibility especially when very young children are present,” he said.
