Residents get chance to explore sand dunes at Windy Point

Dozens of people got a chance to get up close with nature in Palm Springs with a guided tour from the bureau of land management.

People explored the massive sand dunes at Windy Point Tuesday night. The dunes are home to several endangered species of plants and animals.

Experts were on hand to point out wildlife to families hiking up the dunes and in the wash below.

Some species are very hard to find such as the Coachella Valley milk vetch and the fringe toed lizard.

“The area, in general, is called an ACEC which stands for an area of critical environmental concern and that species is because there are species that live here and nowhere else,” said Tracy Albrecht, Interpretive Specialist for BLM.

Last week several people participated in a scorpion hunt which was also put on by the bureau of land management.
