Businesses & shoppers react to sales tax increase placed on Palm Springs ballot

The temperatures aren’t the only thing rising this summer in the Coachella Valley as the Palm Springs City Council voted to place a higher sales tax on the November ballot.

The measure would be an additional half cent per dollar in sales tax money bringing the total sales tax rate to 9.25 percent, the highest sales tax in Riverside County.

One shopper is worried where the extra money will go.

“At least as long as they know where it’s going and where it’s to the benefit whoever they want it to benefit,” said Kent Ramos. “Make it honest and above board not just put in someone’s pocket book and lets say send it up to Sacramento and let them spend it.”

The measure is expected to generate $6.7 million annually, but could it stop even the most die hard from shopping?

“Yes it may come to that point, or my husband will stop me haha,” said shopper Annita Garcia.

City officials say the increase will go towards raising money for ongoing services and help bring city’s significant pension liabilities down.
