Family of Cathedral City bar shooting victim raises money for medical bills

A 34-year-old Cathedral City man and father of two, is recovering in the intensive care unit after suffering two gunshot wounds while at a The Block Bar and Grill on Wednesday.

Rae-Ann Avila thinks back to the night she claims her husband, Mike Avila, was randomly attacked. He was shot just before 11 p.m. last Wednesday at the bar, which is located at 68955 Ramon Road, while celebrating his wife’s birthday, according to family members.

“He went through two surgeries so far. He had four units of blood transfusions the second day. He’s getting another unit of blood right now. He’s still not sealed up just in case they have to go back in,” said Avila.

The shooting stemmed from an argument that escalated into a physical altercation between “two groups of bar patrons,” said Cmdr. Paul Herrera. Four men were arrested Friday at a Banning gas station in connection
with the shooting and were being held on suspicion of attempted murder. Police have not released their names, but identified the men as Coachella Valley residents.

With up to four more weeks in the hospital, plus nearby housing expenses, the Avila family is asking for the community’s help. A family friend created a go fund me page to help the family with medical expenses.

“Mike is the sole provider of his family; wife and two young babies ages 4 and 2. This life-changing event has left this loving, caring, and family-oriented family in a state of turmoil,” the page reads.
