Thousand Palms woman killed in I-10 collision
A Thousand Palms woman is dead after authorities say the car she was driving swerved lanes, striking a guard rail on the I-10 and was then hit by two vehicles – a big rig and a car.
It happened shortly before 9:30 p.m. Thursday, on the 1-10, west of SR-111 near Whitewater. The woman identified as Daisy Diaz Gomez was traveling eastbound in the second lane, when she lost control of her 2012 Toyota Corolla and struck the median guard rail.
The impact caused her car to bounce back to the I-10 and it came to a rest on the third lane.
Around two minutes later, a white International tractor trailer combination driven by 46-year-old Carnel Jackson of Murrieta, came upon the disabled Corolla in the traffic lanes. The front of International struck the back of the Corolla, pushing the car in a southerly direction where it was struck by another vehicle stopped on the right shoulder of the freeway.
The Corolla came to a stop in a dirt field. Gomez was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver in the third vehicle was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
The big rig driver was not taken to the hospital.
Alcohol and or drugs have not been ruled out as contributing factors in the cause of this collision.
