Dog owners prepare for scorching heat in the desert
With temperatures hitting the 110s Saturday making it unbearably for a good part of the day. For dog owners it’s keeping watch on their furry friends.
Bowie, the Siberian husky is getting plenty to drink on this warm Saturday morning at the Palm Desert dog park, avoiding the sweltering heat expected later in the day.
“We just keep him out of the hottest parts of the day. Keep him hydrated, mix his dry food with water,” Dougie Van Sant said.
Bowie was getting exercise and played around with some companions. Van Sant said the earlier he gets his exercise, the less he’ll deal with triple digit temperatures.
“Some days when we’re up at six and seven o clock, we’re out here, because the earlier, the better. By the time they’re done, they’re tired out for the rest of the day,” he said.
According to the Humane Society, pets should have an ample amount of shade and water during hot days, and have them walk on grass instead of potentially burning their paws on hot sidewalks or asphalt.
“If never seen them but I’ve heard the can. I keep away from it, avoid it,” Nicole Hays said.
This dog owner said if the heat gets extremely excessive, her dogs would instead cozy inside.
“Keep them in the air conditioning, keep them active. And then bring them here early,” Hays said.
No matter the method, it will all be focused on beating the dog days of summer.
