Indio Police Department increasing traffic enforcement
With the recent several deadly crashes in the valley, the lndio Police Department are stepping-up enforcement hoping to bring down those numbers.
Officers say they’ve received multiple complaints about speeding and reckless driving. Its dangers like this that has bicyclist Jonah Washburn holding his handlebars a little tighter
“It can be life-threatening because a lot of people don’t pay attention,” Washburn told KESQ & CBS Local 2.
Washburn says distracted driving, reckless driving, drivers speeding all have him on edge and put him in harm’s way.
Of course, there’s a lot of times where I notice I wish there was a cop in this intersection right here because that person did something totally illegal,” Washburn added.
Indio police are addressing those concerns, conducting traffic heightened enforcement on some of the city’s busiest streets.
“What we want to do is correct negative behavior and studies have shown that citations, police enforcement, police activity, police presence, reduces that kind of negative behavior,” said Sgt Dan Marshall, public information officer for IPD.
Marshall says those citations hit people where they hurt, their wallet and during this crackdown, bad drivers can’t escape them.
“If there’s an officer out and they do see a vehicle code violation they’re going to have no discretion and there will be a citation written,” Marshall added.
IPD plans on keeping up this extra traffic enforcement for the next several weeks. Washburn says this news gives him peace of mind and a better sense of safety.
“When the cop is in the area and they it happen they do deal with it effectively and i very proud of them doing that,” Washburn said.
