Riverside County seeking poll workers

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Riverside County’s registrar of voters is still looking for poll workers, particularly individuals who speak multiple languages, for the Nov. 6 midterm election.

Though no experience is necessary, prospective poll workers are required to attend a training session, Registrar Rebecca Spencer said. Also, poll workers must be a registered California voter or a legal resident of the United States who would, except for their citizenship status, otherwise qualify to vote.

Poll workers with experience are eligible to become inspectors, who are paid $125 per day. Poll workers without experience can earn $90. Poll workers will also be paid a $20 stipend to attend a training session.

Teens ages 16 and older are eligible, but have additional requirements. They must be a U.S. citizen, attend a public or private high school and maintain a 2.5 GPA, and get permission from their parents and their school.

In demand are poll workers who are proficient in English and another language, including Cantonese or Mandarin, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese or American Sign Language.

Duties on Election Day might include opening and closing a polling place, helping voters understand their rights and protecting ballots and voting equipment.

Poll workers’ duties will begin at 6:15 a.m. and will end about 9 p.m.
