“Moms Demand Action” group holds meeting to promote gun safety

A local group called “Moms Demand Action” held a meeting today — hoping to raise awareness and support for gun safety in the wake of recent shootings.

The group meets regularly and attendees say they’re concerned that their children and grandchildren feel increasingly unsafe in school environments and regularly practice active shooter lockdown drills.

“These children have grown up in this fear…of not being able to go to school and be safe. constantly worrying that someone is going to break into their school and murder them. It’s just unconscionable that we have created this culture of fear for our children,” said Jackie Conley, a member of Moms Demand Action.

“We’re not asking people to give up their guns, we’re asking people to be responsible about their guns,” said Dori Smith, a leader for Moms Demand Action.

The group is hoping to educate people on gun safety protocols and increase investment in the California Violence Intervention and Prevention Grant Program — which seeks to reduce gun violence in California’s hardest hit communities.
