DSUSD First day of school: Parents and students excited for return of in-person learning

Desert Sands Unified School Districit is the last school district in the Coachella Valley to head back to the classroom. The district welcomed students back to the classroom Tuesday morning.

For the first day of school, Abraham Lincoln Elementary School allowed parents to walk their child to their classroom. DSUSD parent Iliana Rockbank dropped of first grade daughter. Rockbank said she is glad her daughter is back in the classroom.

"Now that she's like in an actual classroom with her peers, she's doing a lot better. She's actually picking things up and she has like a an energy and a hunger for learning. So it's amazing," said Rockbank. "I definitely have a positive outlook on this year she's going she's going to be a really great reader. She's going to be great at math. She's been practicing all summer."

Rockbank said her daughter struggled with virtual learning. But now, no masks, social distancing, or virtual learning required.

Abraham Lincoln Elementary School teacher Katie Reichel is eager to spend time with her students without any COVID restrictions.

"We love our kids. We are a big family here at Abraham Lincoln. And I don't think that many of our parents have been able to see that the past three years because of COVID but that's what we're going to be able to bring back this year," said Reichel.

Even though many COVID restrictions have been relaxed the district said it's prepared to adapt should COVID cases rise.

"I hope that the parents can tell their kids you know, you're going to an awesome school. You're going back with your family and friends and it's going to be a great year," said Reichel.
