Public pools across the valley are closing due to poor air quality

News Channel 3 contacted Palm Springs Swim Center and the Palm Desert Aquatic Center and learned they were closed due to poor air quality.

A hand full of people were walking to the doors of Palm Desert Aquatic Center as the staff was closing its gates.

One family drove from Victorville on a spontaneous day of adventure and was sad to see the Aquatic Center closed. "I was planning on swimming on the taking my swimming test," says Frania Cinco. Cinco says her younger siblings were going to swim as well. "We were just going to chill and the pool, it was just very hot where we live. So we thought over here would be better."

Riverside County shares tips:

When Air Quality is Harmful

Stay inside and inactive

  • Sensitive groups should take extra precautions.
  • Avoid being outside in the afternoon & early evening. That's when air pollution levels are usually highest.
  • Do less physical activity. Physical activity increases the amount of air you breathe.

Keep harmful air out of your home

  • Close doors and windows.
  • Change air filters and run the air conditioning fan in "circulation mode."

Pay attention to signs of health problems

  • Wheezing, coughing & trouble breathing
  • Red, itchy & burning eyes, nose & mouth
  • Pain during deep breathing
  • If you have any of these symptoms, talk to your doctor or nurse.
