Tracking the timeline of Hurricane Hilary

As of the latest update, Hurricane Hilary remains a powerful category 4 hurricane. The latest reading have the storm's minimum pressure as 946mb and has a sustained wind speed of 130mph. The storm is also moving to the north-northwest at 13mph.

Hilary has grown and strengthened very quickly. It became a tropical storm, and was named on Wednesday morning at 8:00AM PDT. By Thursday morning at 8AM, it had strengthened to a category 1 hurricane. Twenty-four hours later, 8AM this morning, Hilary was a major category 4 hurricane with sustained wind speeds well over 140mph.

Hurricane Hilary has been able to strengthen so rapidly thank to the very warm sea surface temperatures it is feeding off of. Tropical cyclones need water temperatures of at least 80°F. As Hilary continues to move north, it will start to enter cooler waters and will begin to weaken. As well, possible interactions between the mountains of Baja California will also further weaken the storm.
