CA Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia won’t seek reelection
California State Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia will not seek reelection in 2024, his spokesperson confirmed.
Garcia's spokesperson did not share specifics behind the assemblymember's decision. His term ends in Dec. 2024
Garcia was first elected to the assembly in 2014. He also served on the Coachella City Council from 2004 to 2006. He became the youngest mayor in Coachella's history when he was elected in 2006 at the age of 29. Garcia served as the city's mayor until 2014.
Garcia's office confirmed that he is endorsing Coachella Valley Unified School District board member Joey Acuña to take over his seat. Acuña served on the CVUSD board from 1992 to 2000. He was elected to the board again in 2014 and has been reelected twice.
Three people signaled their intent to run for the assembly seat. The list includes Indio Councilmember Waymond Fermon, nonprofit director Kalin Morse, and school boardmember/social worker Eric Rodriguez.
Documents on the Riverside County Registrar of Voters show that appears that Fermon and Morse did not file the necessary paperwork as of Saturday afternoon. As of Monday, the registrar's draft candidate list lists Acuña as the only qualified candidate.
The 36th Assembly District covers portions of Riverside and Imperial counties. Locally, the district represents Indio, Coachella, and communities in the east valley.
According to Garcia's office, the 2020 census shows that the 36th Assembly District represents nearly 470,000 people. Almost 70% of the population in this district is Hispanic or Latino (328,453).
