Man Dies After Collision In Palm Springs

A pedestrian died after being hit in Palm Springs Friday night.

Police were called to the 2000 block of North Palm Canyon Drive around 7:28 p.m.

There officers found two pedestrians struck by a Ford Taurus.

The driver of the Ford Taurus was traveling northbound on Palm Canyon Drive when the accident occurred, according to Palm Springs Police. The driver did stay at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

Police rushed both pedestrians to Desert Regional Medical Center.

88-year-old Robert Mathiasen, of Goleta, later died there.

The second pedestrian, an 83-year-old woman also of Goleta, suffered life-threatening injuries. She remains in the hospital, said Palm Springs Police.

Authorities do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision.

“The driver of the involved vehicle remained at the scene and has been cooperative with investigators,” Sergeant Mike Kovaleff said.
