Local cheer program sending two teams to nationals in Disney World
PALM DESERT, Calif-
“Probably about 60-banners that have to go up from the past year. We had a tremendous year, kids aged 4 to 18, we have had five teams this year and they have done incredibly well.” said Founder and Director of Desert Elite Mavericks Amy Grey.
Two of those teams have done so well that they will compete in Orlando on May 11th with a national title on the line in Walt Disney World.
“The two teams that are going to Orlando to the D-2 Summit which is kind of like our Super Bowl of cheerleading. They are our Rebels and Renegades.” added Grey.
They are not going to take it easy in the Sunshine State, going for yet another trophy to add to the wall.
“This year we have a shot at going, we are going, and a shot to win also. I am determined to win, excited to win.” Captain Brittny Jaramilo said.
The best part is they get to experience it all together as a team.
“This is like my second family, the gym is like my second home. Very fun, we are like brothers and sisters with eachother and can do anything with eachother.” Jaramilo added.
“I like how we can come together as a family, and a team. All talk to eachother, motivate eachother, that’s my favorite part about cheering is the motivation.” Paige Hefner of Stepping Stones School said.
A lof of planning and execution not just on the cheer routines, but the travel plans to Orlando.
“Taking 40-athletes, 5-coaches, and 56-parents and family members. 101 people coming from the Coachella Valley, its awesome. The first time we have took two teams to the prestiogous event.” Grey said.
All well trying to become winners in more ways than just one.
“We teach them the value of hard work, goal setting, and dedication to a purpose. They learn a lot about working with people and overcoming adversity. Rising when you fall, it’s all things that go together about being a team.” Great said.
Yes it is a sport.
“Cheerling leading is a sport. High School is sidelines and supporting other sports. As All-Star cheerleaders they are this sport. The athleticism is quite different and the training is quite different.” Gray finished.
