Indio College of the Desert campus makes big progress
“This is incredible. We’ve been waiting a long time for this in Indio and the east valley,” Indio Mayor Elaine Holmes said.
The College of the Desert satellite campus in Indio broke ground last October. Now, celebration is in order for the construction progress.
City officials gathered at the construction site on Civic Center Drive in Indio for an official beam signing ceremony.
“It marks when you’re really getting your structure at a place where I call the bones of the building are in place. It’s a pretty big milestone on a project,” College of the Desert president Joel Kinnamon said.
Starting with Mayor Holmes, leaders signed their names on a ceremonial beam and a matted photograph of the building in its current steel-framed state of construction.
“The signing of this beam really memorializes this moment in time and really brings together all the dreams and vision of our community and city leaders,” Holmes said.
The 25 million dollar project includes a 40 thousand square foot education center and 10 thousand square feet of retail space.
“At full capacity, there will be 3000 students here. That means 3000 of our youth and young adults and adults alike will be able to take advantage of this school this facility…be able to realize their dreams,” Holmes said.
The campus should be completed spring of 2014.
