Metrolink Riverside County expansion gets green light to go

A judge has approved settlement of a lawsuit that blocked a $247 million commuter rail project in Southern California.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise says the judge signed off last week on a $3 million deal that will permit construction of a Riverside-to-Perris extension of the Metrolink regional train system. Authorities hope to begin the work in late October or November if they can lock in federal funding.

An environmental group, Friends of Riverside’s Hills, opposed the project but agreed to settle its suit earlier this month. The deal provides money for noise-reduction for those living near the tracks, and to create nearby bicycle and hiking trails.
