CHP to step up enforcement along Interstate 10
Beginning today, as part of a nationwide effort toprevent traffic fatalities over Labor Day weekend, the California HighwayPatrol will be intensifying enforcement activity on Interstate 10, joiningmultiple law enforcement agencies in other states that will be doing the samething along the roughly 2,450-mile route.
The “I-10 Challenge” will continue to 11:59 p.m. Monday, with theobjective of “zero fatalities” along the heavily traveled corridor that spanseight states — from California on the west coast to Florida on the east.
About 150 miles of the interstate traverses Riverside County, fromCherry Valley to Blythe.
“We are excited to partner with highway patrol agencies across thenation and challenge the people of California to drive safe this Labor Dayholiday weekend,” said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow. “We hope to accomplishour goal by educating motorists about the leading causes of traffic collisionsand encouraging the people of California to follow the rules of the road anddrive safely.”
According to the CHP, a person is killed in a crash an average of everyfour days on I-10 in California.
The I-10 Challenge was inspired by a similar campaign successfullyconducted by the Florida Highway Patrol along Interstate 80.
During this weekend’s effort, the CHP will be aggressively ticketingtraffic violators — with particular attention paid to DUI suspects, speedersand “distracted drivers,” according to the agency.
The campaign will be a component of the CHP’s Labor Day weekend“maximum enforcement period,” during which all available officers hit thestreets to nab lawbreakers.
