29 Palms human trafficking suspects turn selves in
San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies located a female juvenile that was abandoned in the desert in Twentynine Palms last June. This sparked a four-month-long investigation into human trafficking that led deputies to three more adult victims that were allegedly targeted by a man and woman from Twentynine Palms, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies said the suspected traffickers were identified as 26-year-old Kevin Akins and 22-year-old Aubrei Wilson. The pair allegedly lured young females from states as far away as Ohio and Texas, promising romantic relationships. When the victims arrived, they were made to work as prostitutes, according to the sheriff’s release.
Several search warrants were served at six locations in Twentynine Palms and Palm Desert at the end of September, but the suspects were able to elude deputies at that time. Officials said they searched homes, hotels and a brothel the suspects were operating in a residential area.
Investigators asked for the public’s help in locating Atkins and Wilson but the suspects continued to avoid capture. Interestingly enough, about three and a half months later, the suspects turned themselves in to authorities.
Officials said both Atkins and Wilson turned themselves in on January 17 to face charges of human trafficking of a minor. They also said the suspects are facing a charge of sexual exploitation of a minor.
The sheriff’s department didn’t elaborate on the three adult victims, or any pending charges that may come from those cases.
The investigation is ongoing and News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 will deliver updated information as authorities move forward with the case.
