2 killed on Palm Springs flight after small plane crashes in Sonoma County

A small plane that departed from Palm Springs International Airport on Thursday night crashed in Sonoma County, killing both people on board.

The plane was headed to Santa Rosa when it crashed at about 7 p.m. Officials said the single-engine piper pa-24 crashed under unknown circumstances. The victims haven’t been identified yet.

The plane came to rest in a muddy field about two miles from the airport. It didn’t hit any trees or structures in the area and it didn’t cause a fire.

A teenager named Eric Morris said he was home when the plane hit the ground about 80-feet away from his house. Morris lives at 100 Wood Ranch Road in an unincorporated area of Santa Rosa.

Morris said his mom and brother were at home as well and their father, an off-duty Rincon Valley Fire Department captain, was near the home and responded to the crash.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash. News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 will post updates as more information becomes available.
