Early morning commuters slowed by I-10 freeway construction
UPDATE: 5:33 a.m. All traffic lanes are open again and traffic is moving again smoothly.
———-
An overnight construction freeway closure was slowing traffic on EASTBOUND Interstate 10 in Indio early Thursday morning.
All EASTBOUND freeway lanes were closed overnight, and traffic was being detoured off the freeway using the Jefferson Street exit ramp.
Motorists were being detoured onto a frontage road then back onto the freeway at Monroe Street as crews worked on a second new bridge now under construction at the Jefferson Street Interchange.
Westbound I-10 freeway lanes were open and westbound traffic was not impacted by the closure.
Motorists hoping to enter the freeway from Indio Boulevard and Jefferson Street were being detoured to Varner Road then onto the freeway at Washington Street or Monroe Street.
Eastbound traffic was expected to be detoured until the project wrapped up for the day by 6:00 a.m.
No major delays were being reported as of 4:00 a.m., but traffic typically picks up at 5:00 a.m., so motorists were urged to use caution.
