Whitewater Rest Area reopens after months of being shut down
After months of being shut down, the Whitewater Rest Area on westbound I-10 has reopened; a welcoming sight for truck drivers making a long haul.
Cal Trans officials said the rest area reopened Tuesday at 9 a.m. Crews were making necessary repairs to a water pump at the rest area, and after the area passed inspection they were able to reopen it to the public.
KESQ and CBS Local 2 interviewed truck drivers at the rest area back in February.
Ernesto Gutierrez travels back and forth from Reno, Nevada. He told us, “When you’re traveling up and down Interstate 10, and you’re getting sleepy or tired, or whatever the case is, Whitewater used to be a good place for us to be able to pull in and get a good night’s sleep, (and) get the rest that they need. But unfortunately when they closed it, they took that opportunity away.”
Caltrans officials said the recent maintenance issues were mainly tied to the rest area’s water pump, which they said at one point led them to shut down the rest stop for a year and a half.
