Goldenvoice loans City of Coachella giant bear statue

Goldenvoice, the promoter of Coachella Fest has loaned the City of Coachella a giant bear statue that is now installed at a city park.

The 15-foot-tall statue “Big Bear,” debuted at Shady Lane Park this week. The statue has been a part of the music festival since 2015.

The statue was commissioned by Goldenvoice and created by Santa Fe, New Mexico-based artist Don Kennell, who constructed Big Bear out of recycled materials such as rusted steel and fashioned the work’s eyes out of glass.

The statue also includes a swing fashioned after the California state flag, with Big Bear inspired by the flag’s iconic grizzly.

City officials say the statue’s installation will add to Coachella’s growing arts district.

“Big Bear is going to provide a visual anchor to our art corridor along Shady Lane, which leads into our downtown,” Coachella Mayor Steven Hernandez said.
