Local girls raise thousands for Hurricane Harvey victims
Two local girls are making it their mission to help those who lost so much in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. After hearing about the devastation following the hurricane, 7-year-old Nyah Williams told her dad she wanted to do something.
“When all the news was on my wife was watching it and Nyah was right alongside. And she said to my wife, ‘We need to do something. These people are losing everything. And I have an idea,'” Erik Williams said.
That’s when she decided to collect money from her classmates at Washington Charter.
“Because it would help people who lost a lot of things in the flood. And they don’t have to hide in shelters, and they can have their house back, and all the things that they need, and we could maybe replace all their things,” 7 year old Nyah Williams said.
In less than a week, the two girls raised more than $7,000. The girls said it’s important to think of others in times of need.
“I hope they will get the things they need,” said 6-year-old Hero Saad.
Nyah’s dad said he couldn’t be more proud.
“As adults we’ll watch these things on TV and well go, ‘Man that’s terrible. I wish I could do something.’ But as a little kid that just goes, ‘We can do something, and we’re going to do something.’ That inspires me as an adult, where 6-year-olds saying let’s do this and they did it,” Williams said.
The girls are in the process of figuring out which organization to donate the money through. They said they know what they raised will make a big difference in the lives of others.
