Palm Desert to vote on marijuana businesses
Marijuana businesses could be rolling out shops in another valley city, with Palm Desert City leaders expected to vote on a proposed ordinance Thursday night allowing marijuana businesses to operate within its limits.
Julie Montante, owner of PSA Organica in Palm Springs wants to expand her business to Palm Desert.
“We’re hoping to expand to the other side of the valley and give those patients that can’t drive all the way to Palm Springs and give them their new territory so they don’t have to go the distance.”
City leaders are discussing the idea marijuana business in Palm Desert, now that recreational marijuana is legal throughout California.
“I think it has a lot to do with Proposition 64, in that voters approved the legalization of cannabis. and Palm Desert needs to address it one way or another. It’s in our community, it’s in the valley. And I think, for the city of Palm Desert, it needs to be addressed, but it needs to be addressed responsibly.”
If the ordinance is passed, city leaders say dispensaries would be located in commercial areas throughout the city and would include restrictions such as not being directly next to housing developments, and not being within 1,500 feet of another cannabis business.
With the ordinance up for a vote, Montante and others hope to capitalize on cannabis throughout the valley.
“Probably a thriving business that people will come and see us and not be afraid to come in to a medical dispensary and they’ll be able to enjoy our budtenders, and talk with us.”
Seja says if the ordinance is passed, they’ll allow six dispensaries to open within the city.
Other businesses like cultivation and testing facilities will be located in industrial areas and all businesses are not allowed to be located within 600 feet of a school.
