Multi-car crash sparks fire in Desert Hot Springs home; 5 people displaced
A two-vehicle collision triggered a fire that spread to at least two homes Friday in Desert Hot Springs.
The crash was reported at 1:55 p.m. along the 13000 block of Quinta Way, near Hacienda Avenue, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
More than 40 firefighters from multiple agencies responded to the resulting fire and a SunLine Transit bus was requested to give firefighters a place to cool down, according to a Riverside County fire department Twitter post.
The fire was contained at approximately 3:10 p.m. 3 adults and 2 children were displaced by the fire.
There were no immediate details on the cause of the traffic collision.
“It was crazy," said Tyiesha Andrews. "I kinda just feel like I feel like it doesn’t feel like its real.”
Emotions running high for Tyiesha Andrews as she recalls her Desert Hot Springs home caught on fire after a car slammed into her living room.
“I was literally in that front room right there when it happened feet away from the car holding my infant," said Andrews. "Just to think that car just went a little bit more, just a little bit more it would have been a whole different scenario.”
Exclusive video obtained through a neighbor's surveillance camera, A red jeep sideswiping a Honda Civic parked in front before crashing into the home. Seconds later, the car igniting into flames. The driver hopping out trying to running away before returning, trying to enter the home multiple times.
“He was very distorted," said Malcolm Cade. "He didn’t know what was going on, he hit the front and then he started breaking in through one of the windows. He broke in through the other bedroom window.”
According to Desert Hot Springs police, a male suspect was arrested on scene.
As for the Cade family, they take us inside their home as they try to salvage the pieces left behind.
“The more I walk through my house, the more I realize how much I lost and how much I am going to keep realizing as I go through my house how much everything is gone," said Andrews.
Andrews finding one special memory that was saved.
“It’s my son’s ultra-sound," said Andrews. "Miserable, cause I know everything else is gone.”
It still remains unclear as to why the driver of the car was taken into custody.
Around 10:50 p.m., two fire engines showed up to the home to monitor hotspots near the air conditioning vent.
