Local organization holds ICE workshop for immigrants
A local organization is looking to educate the immigrant community when it comes to raids by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement or Border Patrol agents.
The Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice, a pro-immigrant rights coalition, hosted a workshop Wednesday afternoon to help educate people on what they should do if they or a loved one is approached by immigration agents.
The meeting discussed what rights people have and what type of documentation to show if approached. The organization said they have received a lot of calls from people in the east valley and are here to advise those what to do.
“We’ve been getting a lot of calls lately because of increased border patrol presence and also increased ICE,” said Jennaya Dunlap, an emergency response coordinator with the Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice. “Most of the time they will pretend they are police officers instead of identifying themselves as immigration agents.”
Dunlap continued, “It’s extremely important because when immigration picks them up the family is completely unaware of what the next step is. What could happen and obviously in a state of trauma because of how these raids are carried out.”
The workshops were announced after ICE agents were recorded questioning people at an AM/PM in Indio last week.
