Firefighters battle carport fire at Palm Desert apartment complex
Firefighters were working to contain a fire reported Wednesday morning at the Regent Apartments complex in Palm Desert.
CalFire crews were called to the 73300 block of Country Club Drive at 4:30 a.m. where some residents were evacuated from their units.
“Firefighters took quick action and rescued the people out of the apartment complex and also extinguished the fire and prevented the fire from getting into the apartment complex. They did an amazing job,” said Battalion Chief Mike Beverlin with CalFire.
At least 6 vehicles were burned and several outdoor carports were destroyed, but no injuries were reported.
“I was at home sleeping and I heard a knock on the door. It so happened that there was a fire and it was very frightening. I had to leave one of my pets behind. He’s okay now thankfully, but it was definitely very traumatic," said Rafael Wahba, a Regent resident who lost his car in the early morning fire. “That’s actually my vehicle right there. Unfortunately it’s gone now,” he said, gesturing to the remains of his red Nissan.
Several residents say they believe the fire started in a dumpster and then traveled along the wooden carport, destroying the cars underneath.
Management on the property says they're investigating what ignited the fire.
