Man Identified In Deadly Palm Springs Fire
PALM SPRINGS -One of five people who died in a mobile home fire north of Palm Springs was identified today as a 32-year-old Palm Springs man.
Telesforo Hernandez-Perez died around 6:45 a.m. New Year’s Day at the mobile home at 150 Oregon Trail in the Western Village Mobile Home Park. How the fire started was under investigation.
About 25 firefighters had the blaze out in about 15 minutes, but the trailer was destroyed and the occupants were unable to get out in time, according to Jody Hagemann of the Riverside County Fire Department.
The other victims — a 30-year-old woman, 11-and 6-year-old girls and 7-year-old boy — have been tentatively identified. To positively identify them, coroner’s investigators may need to dental records, sheriff’s Sgt. Dennis Gutierrez said.
On Tuesday, Palm Springs officials encouraged residents to donate money to the victims’ surviving family member, Ciria Silva, 13, so she can bury her family members.
“When a tragedy like this occurs, it’s important we all come together as a community and do whatever we can to help,” said Mayor Steve Pougnet.
Vista del Monte Elementary and Raymond Cree Middle schools sent home letters to parents Monday asking for donations to help the funeral costs.
Donations can be dropped off at Vista del Monte and Raymond Cree.
