Damage Exceeds $14 Million From Weekend Quake

EUREKA -Officials are still working on damage estimates from a powerful earthquake that struck Humboldt County over the weekend. So far, the city of Eureka says it has racked up more than $14 million in damage.

Gary Bird, spokesman for the largest Northern California city affected by Saturday’s magnitude-6.5 quake, says the estimate is now up to $14.3 million and covers 175 buildings.

Officials still don’t have a damage estimate for the whole county.

The temblor, which hit offshore about 27 miles southwest of Eureka, sent about 30 people to emergency rooms but only one was seriously injured – an elderly person who fell and suffered a broken hip.
