Mary Pickford Theater To Display Titanic Artifacts
A Cathedral City movie theater will display artifacts from the wreck of the Titanic this afternoon as part of the movie’s re-release marking the 100th anniversary of the ship’s sinking.
The UltraStar Cinemas Mary Pickford Theater will display Titanic wreckage from 3 to 8 p.m., and there is no charge to see the artifacts, UltraStar spokeswoman Sandy Moul said. The items are owned by collector Will Twardy and will be displayed at other UltraStar theaters, as well.
The Titanic sank to the bottom of the north Atlantic on April 15, 1912. The 1997 film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet was re-released in 3- D for the 100th anniversary and is playing at the Pickford Theater.
Twardy, a retired Navy officer who lives in the San Diego area, became a private collector of Titanic artifacts about 15 years ago, after the film was first released in theaters. Twardy owned a small video store chain in the San Diego area and saw the film.
Through an acquaintance, he was introduced to one of the world’s largest private collectors of Titanic artifacts and memorabilia, according to Moul. Twardy bought several items from the collector, whose name was not disclosed, including the items on display today.
The artifacts on display, which people can photograph, include a section of a wooden folding deck chair, a section of headboard from a White Star Line deck chair, a section of carved English oak from the first-class grand staircase, and a door, Moul said.
