Anza Fire 100 percent contained, 540+ acres burned

A brush fire in east Anza that increased to more than 540 acres was contained Saturday, Riverside County Fire Department officials said.

It started when flames sparked in a motor home sometime before noon on Monday near the junction of state Routes 74 and 371. The fire spread to vegetation and brush.

Friday night, the fire was holding at 450 acres but grew to 543 acres Saturday morning as firefighters were finishing control lines and mopping up heavy fuels around the fire perimeter.

The owner of the motor home suffered some second- and third-degree burns. Three firefighters also were hospitalized with minor injuries, but were back on duty Wednesday, fire department officials said.

Highway 74 was shut down Monday night and residents from the area were evacuated, but by Tuesday night, the freeway was reopened, evacuation orders were lifted and the fire was 50 percent contained, according to fire officials.
