People hear and feel training at Twentynine Palms

Some High desert residents were hearing and feeling booms Wednesday morning.

A public information officer at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms told KESQ News Channel 3 / CBS Local 2 News a training exercise was underway.

The spokesman said an Integrated Training Exercise was underway and involves Marines using heavy artillery.

On it’s website, the Marine Corps base said the critical training involves Marines and Sailors at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, which prepares them for combat.

The website says the Marines and Sailors, “must train as they would fight — using the mortars, artillery, tanks, aircraft and guns they would use in combat. These training events generate sounds.”

The base admits noise from live fire training can sometimes be heard in surrounding communities. “For some, the sounds coming from the Combat Center may be disruptive,” according to the website, “while others may consider them the ‘Sounds of Freedom.'”

Some viewers in Yucca Valley and Desert Hot Springs commented on Facebook and contacted our newsroom to report what they thought was an earthquake, including windows rattling and a rolling sensation.

The US Geological Survey reported no seismic activity in the high desert or low desert areas early Wednesday morning.
