Desert Hot Springs Candidates React To Election Results
DESERT HOT SPRINGS – The winners ofthis city’scouncil race celebrated until just before midnight, Tuesday.
The voters ofDesert Hot Springshad spoken, and their choices made one clear statement: they like the way this city has been going these past two years and they want the same team to lead them.
When asked what her election victory meant for Desert Hot Springs, re-elected Mayor Yvonne Parks answers, “I think it means everything for Desert Hot Springs. It means we are going to continue the momentum that we had these past two years of an action council. One that does things. If we say we’re going to do something, we do it. And we work together as a team.”
Councilman Scott Matas was re-elected and agrees with Mayor Parks, “We’ve made new parks, we’ve made better public safety, we’ve got commercial development coming. When I say I’m going to do it, I do it.”
Councilwoman Jan Pye was also re-elected and simply responded, “I’m feeling humbled and honored.”
Supporters of Councilman Russell Bett’s run for mayor cheered loudly early in the night, but their hopes were dampened when Betts watched News Channel 3 to find the vote was going against him.
He replies, “The agenda is what you saw at the council meeting tonight. It was a large attempt at a developer giveaway and this kind of stuff is not going to get past this council whether I’m the mayor or if I’m a councilman.”
Russ Martin came in third in the race for council. He adds, “I’ve really enjoyed working on the police commission and I look forward in continuing in that vein and helping out the chief of police.”
After all the celebrations and all the campaigning, the council will remain exactly the same. Desert Hot Springs voters like this council team just the way it is.
