Teacher Solves Math And Life Problems
So many teachers work hard and dedicate themselves to their students here in the desert and every month, we honor a teacher making a difference with the KESQ “Golden Apple” award. Our March winner is Lori Matacia from Desert Hot Springs High School.
“She’s a huge inspiration to all of us,” says Terrence Simms, Desert Hot Springs High School student.
“She’s funny and makes class fun,” says Zachery Kingston, Desert Hot Springs High School student.
Math is a subject most people don’t like, but students in Ms.Matacia’s class, love it.
“I’ve never had a teacher make math so fun,” says Simms.
Students say Ms.Matacia’s laid back approach helps them learn and enjoy school. Shante Rodriguez says math never added up until met Matacia.
“My freshman and sophmore year I didn’t do very good, then I came to this class and shaped up,” says Rodriguez.
Students say Matacia is not only a great teacher, but also a great listener. She helps students solve problems on the board and in their lives.
“She’s like a mom to me,” says Rodriguez. “Anytime I have a problem I can go to her and she’ll help me with it.”
Matacia says stress and personal issues can take away from learning. So, she tries to help students overcome those obstacles.
“In order to learn you need a clear mind and need to be strong,” says Matacia. “When you have other things on your mind it’s hard to focus.”
Matacia’s goal is for each student to do the best they can, to go to college and have successful careers.
“They can do whatever they want in life,” says Matacia.
