Authorities destroy grenade offered for sale at antique mall

Authorities today destroyed a “suspicious” hand
grenade that had been for sale at an antique mall in Cathedral City, a police
sergeant said.
A police department employee doing a compliance check at Victoria’s
Attic in the 68700 block of East Palm Canyon Drive noticed the U.S. military-
style hand grenade being sold as a piece of World War II memorabilia, Sgt. Paul
Herrera said.
The seller said the device was not “live,” he said.
“However, based on some suspicious characteristics of the grenade,
Cathedral City police detectives were called out to evaluate the item,”
Herrera said.
Detectives called the Riverside County Sheriff Department’s Hazardous
Device Team to dispose of the grenade, and the bomb squad destroyed it at
another location, Herrera said.
“Initial investigation revealed it was not a live grenade,” he said.
