IRS website helping taxpayers file returns

It’s that time of year again: dreaded tax time. The tax filing deadline is less than a month away on April 15.

If you haven’t already filed your 2012 tax return, the Internal Revenue Service is trying to make it as easy as possible.

At www.irs.gov you can e-file at no cost, and if your annual income is $57,000 or less, you get free access to a variety of software programs.

“I would argue if you can get to a shopping cart and buy things online, that with all the things we do with technology on the Internet, you can file a tax return the same way. It really won’t take that long,” said IRS spokesman Raphael Tulino.

Despite the user-friendly website, IRS data show 60 percent of all taxpayers hire a tax professional to file their returns.
