Man caught with $1.2 million in cocaine in Salton City

Around 2 p.m. Friday, Border Patrol agents at the Highway 86 checkpoint between Westmorland and Salton City caught a man attempting to transport 38 pounds of cocaine.

As the man drove through the checkpoint, a canine team alerted the agents to search the vehicle, a red Ford Ranger. Upon inspection, agents discovered 13 wrapped packages concealed within the truck’s seats and walls of the truck bed. Cocaine in the packages totaled 38 pounds with an estimated value of $1.2 million.

The 32-year-old man is a citizen of Mexico and a Lawfully Admitted Permanent Resident card holder. He was arrested and turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration, along with the vehicle and drugs, for further investigation.
